This is Bart Baggett, president of Handwriting University, with an amazingly interesting handwriting analysis samples that I want you to apply your skills to.

Now, in all fairness, as I was given this handwriting sample, I was told some back-story of this individual. I don’t like having the back-story because I didn’t want my analysis to be slanted good or bad. However in all fairness because I was told this person was a convicted murderer of three women, it was difficult not to automatically look for the bad things in this person’s handwriting. There have been books written about criminal tendencies and handwriting of evil, crazy, psychopaths… Danny might end up in one of those books.

With that being said, even if I wasn’t told this person was a convicted murderer, it’d be difficult to find the good things because there’s so many interesting negative qualities that jump to the surface.

I mention that because it’s easy to be swayed into finding good or bad based on the framing of the handwriting sample enclosed.  Let’s dig into the handwriting sample.  We have a two page handwritten note.  There are lots of individual traits so I’ve asked our graphic artist to break it up into three or four sections so we can break them apart specifically the sections where we identify traits.  The first thing that you do is you look for any overall patterns or traits that jump out at you.  In this case there are lots of individual traits that jump out at you.

For beginner students: just take those individual traits which you know to be a specific trait such as temper, vanity, stubbornness, mother issues, anger at women, etc. Now I want you to circle, outline, and note the traits you find.

Now the real skill as an advanced handwriting expert is to combine those traits along with the rhythm, spacing, alignment, baseline, and the line quality to come up with an entire personality profile.

Even if you are just beginning and you have the primary traits, you will find this person is fascinating and fascinatingly troubled.

So let’s start with some of the primary traits that you probably know if you have the basic 101 course or the certification course.  If you go left to right on Page 1, you’ll see the very first trait is something that is not included in any of those courses because quite frankly this is the first time I’ve ever seen it.  It is a reverse D loop in the D stem.  It’s in the stem and the actual oval shape.

The reason I circled this ‘d’ because this is highly unusual. As I dug around and researched, I did find that there is some meaning to this and some precedent to having a warped ‘d’.  Any kind of upper loops that are off indicates a warped sense of morality.  I’ve seen this in the ‘h’ quite a bit.  This is a similar loop and likewise the oval in the ‘d’ which starts down almost like a worry loop. A worry loop is a beginning loop in the ‘m’ or ‘n’ which is an advanced trait.  I know those of you that have just taken the basic course wouldn’t know that but instead of making an oval counterclockwise, this guy makes the oval in the ‘d’ clockwise.  When you see this in an ‘o’ which I have rarely seen, all the books indicate this is someone who is absolutely dishonest.  Now my first thought and maybe it’s fluidity of thinking but based on other books on the topic, it is a symbol of severe dishonesty.

The next trait is resentment at religion. You have to go all the way to the middle of the page to see this ‘d’ which has a anger tick in the upper zone. Anything in the upper zone relates to religious ideas, philosophies and we see an anger tick toward that.  This anger tick at any part in the handwriting is similar to resentment.  You would know this if you owned the masters or advanced course but all the anger ticks are fine lines in the upper zone indicates some kind of annoyance or philosophy.The next trait on the top is a stinger.  This is a very common trait even if you have the basic 101 course.  It indicates an anger at women especially strong, challenging women.  One could speculate this person had anger issues at his mother however stingers aren’t always pertaining to the mother and it doesn’t always indicate hatred but it does indicate an anger and some issues from the past.  If I saw this trait I would immediately go look for and hunt down a personal pronoun ‘I’ and analyze whether or not his relationship with his mother was good or not.

The next trait is a ‘d’ stem that indicates vanity.  If you look at the word ‘tried’ that ‘d’ stem is three to four times larger than the middle zone.  Vanity indicates a blaming nature, a tendency to be excessively concerned with what people think of him, and being condescending towards others. Now shift your eyes to the middle of the page and of course there is the capital personal pronoun ‘I’ and it says “is the public aware” and you see the ‘I’ throughout the next couple of lines.  There is a loop on the bottom, but there is not a loop on the top.  Depending on which handwriting analysis book you read, that could be mother issues or father issues.  However, based on my experience, the retraced top loop indicates  issues with the person’s mother.  The bottom loop (the boat) represents issue with the father.  So, this sample would indicate mommy issues or a lack of connection or a lack of trust with his mother.  This is further correlated by the stinger in the other parts of the handwriting.  Therefore, you know that women are his enemy… he blames them for his angst.

If you look in the middle of the page you see the word murder.  There is a loop at the base of the ‘m’ stem.  This is a textbook trait for worry and this is found in the Level 501 advanced trait dictionary and it is called the “worry loop”.  I recently discovered that even though it is on the 301 final exam, some of the students didn’t have it in the basic dictionary.  Those of you that are looking to learn a new trait from the advanced course, this is it;  a worry loop.
I also put something rather advanced here.  The Ls and Hs in the phrase, “taking naps at will, eating three well-balanced hot meals a day” has an ink spot in the 11:00 position.  This is an indicator of health issues and this would be what they call pain dots.  This is in the advanced course.  The two sections on health by Teresa DeBerry and Dr. Alexander talk about health issues and indicated a lot of unusual dots throughout the writing.  If you were to purely adhere to the basic health issues of Dogma which is currently being written, this would indicate a head injury and probably on the right side of the head.  There is controversy whether it is the left or right side of the head and so the only way to really know is to actually investigate the guy and see what kind of scars or injuries he has on his head. In this case, I’d certainly go with the left side of the head only because I have a scar on the left side of the head and I have a ink spot right there in my own Hs.  That was the first time I became convinced that perhaps you could tell health issues from handwriting when it happened to me.Argumentativeness: if you look at the word “hospital”, that is a classic argumentative.  That is a stubborn trait that is upside down.  Looks like a huge ‘V’.  Classic primary trait.

Down in the middle of the page, we see excellent examples of temper.  We see one with pointed Ts. That’s sarcasm and mean temper.  We see some that are on the right side of the page which is classic temper.  All of them in the upper part of the ‘t’ which is a good self esteem high goals or at least moderate goals.  This is not someone that’s going to be pushed around.  This is someone who’s going to push people around.  Not only is he angry and pissed off at women, but he has just enough self esteem to do something about his anger issues.Finally on the same page lower hand corner, we see two examples of stubbornness which is almost like argumentativeness but it’s in the upper zone.  This person is not going to be confused with the facts.  Once he makes up his mind, he is stubborn.  He is like a child.On the next page I want to point out some of the same traits in the second handwriting sample and add a couple of new ones.  The primary one is the weird reversed oval in the ‘d’ I was referring to in the first section of the article.  Now we see the word “not”.  Again the circle in the ‘o’ is a clockwise oval.  This is not something you normally see and this is usually an indicator of some really warped thinking.On the right side, this is one of those traits that you read about but you never fully understand.  It’s the idea of muddy handwriting.  Muddy basically means poor line quality, letters on top of each other, and basically dirty handwriting.  This is easily a symbol of muddy thinking; excessive passion, excessive lack of self-control and essentially not a high level of maturity but passion rules.  It’s not a primary trait.  It’s one of those traits you see a lot in the Gestalt handwriting and in this situation, it definitely does have its place as the line quality is shaky which means the mental quality and the mental processes are not linear.

In the middle of the page, we see the traits we’ve seen before but again temper is throughout the handwriting. His temper is very bad so if you were to ask me, “Would he be violent?” I don’t see aggressiveness but we do see anger, temper, bossiness, and lying. I would say that you definitely have some issues that I would worry about and I would think violence would be one of them even though we don’t have that primary trait of aggressiveness as I would expect.

Finally you see the domineering, pushy, bossy trait.  This guy is… just excuse the terminology, but he’s a jerk.  He’s a pushy jerk and if you read the content of the letter, it confirms it completely.  Finally on the very right hand corner, we talk about the ‘n’ that is not very clear.  They’re square and shaky.  It’s  poor thinking skills.  They’re muddled thinking.  It’s the opposite of a fluid thinker so this person is unpredictable.  He does not make the same decision twice based on the same stimuli. He is generally unstable.

Hi Bart,
Going through my late parents’ paperwork and I found a 1932 handwriting analysis chart by A. Dolph Dean, Graphologist. Apparently my parents had gone to him for consultation because they had written their names on the back of the chart, and on the front there were pencil marks checking off which of the characteristics applied to their handwriting. The chart is just an 8×11 sheet of paper folded into eighths. I don’t want to give it away because it has my parents writing on it but if you would like me to scan it and send you a copy in an email, I’d be happy to do that

Last week a reporter from The Atlantic asked me to review the signatures of the top GOP candidates for the Republican candidate for president of the United States.  I pleaded with the reporter to allow me to use full samples of handwriting and not just signatures on baseballs… but reporters don’t really need a full “analysis,” they just want a snapshot and a quick bit for an article on deadline. Herman Caine — his handwriting actually looks like the handwriting of an older man with some health issues. At the time he wrote this signature, he seemed to be annoyed and even moderately depressed. However, in all fairness, writing on a baseball that goes in a circular motion could easily force your baseline tilt downward… that is the grapho-logical sign of depression. So, I have no idea why he chose to write the number’s 999; perhaps that is his baseball jersey number in his fictional baseball league. His most positive trait is his strong determination. His slow writing ability concerns me… this normally is a pre-cursor to serious health issues or sluggish thinking in old age.

John Huntsman — John is one of the quickest and most intellectual of the candidates. He is a fluid thinker with a sharp mind. He has persistence and strong leadership skills. His ambition is well placed and supports a healthy self-esteem. He has good focus, good concentration and he normally has something to say and a witty comeback;… he is sharp. Of all the candidates, he seems the most down to earth and interesting. I’d probably like to hang out and have a drink with this guy.

Michele Bachmann — Michele lets her emotions rule much of her behavior, which leads to emotional reactions and perhaps to making statements she later regrets. She has an analytical mind and can be fluid in her verbal arguments and conversations. Her ego has a desperate need for attention which can also be interpreted as her being someone who likes the limelight and yearns for fame. If this trait were found in a single woman, she could be considered flirtatious. She’s generally optimistic, diplomatic, emotional and a smooth talker. She has moderate intelligence compared to some of the other candidate,… who are borderline geniuses.

Mitt Romney — Mitt is probably one of the quickest thinkers and possesses the largest ego among the GOP candidates. He has the fastest intellectual ability to process information – thus, he is rarely at a loss for words and makes decisions very quickly. The downside to such quick processing of information and decision-making  is that many times he doesn’t have time or make time to dig deeply for all of the facts. So, if Mitt Romney surrounds himself with a top-notch research team that gives him reliable facts, he’ll probably make intelligent decisions. He has two other traits that correspond with over achiever; he has enthusiasm (energy to sell his ideas) and he has mental and physical determination to fight through obstacles that would stall a weaker-willed person. He has the energy to work the kind of hours required to be president. He also has intense focus to solve problems.. The only negative side to his high goals and ambition is that his ego and ambition are often ‘unreachable’ and ‘not grounded in reality’. But, in the history of the world, great achievements have often been ridiculed as impossible and Mitt doesn’t really believe in “impossible.”

* As I re-read Mitt’s analysis, one might believe that I am a fan or supporter of him. I am not. I am a fan of successful people with high self-esteem. I will not be voting for him despite his powerful and impressive handwriting analysis.

Newt Gingrich — Newt Gingrich has a signature that is illegible. One couldn’t even decipher what his name really is. In all fairness, if my parents named me Newt, perhaps I would scribble it out as well. However, grapho-logically speaking, … illegible writing signifies sneakiness and impatience.

People who do not sign their name legibly usually have an enormous ego and a fear of people finding out who they really are. This is the most “generalized” personality trait that I opine on - a regular basis – and I know it has many exceptions. The writer will argue he is always in a hurry or simply must sign his name hundreds of times a day. Regardless, I still trust these people less initially, until proven trustworthy at a later date.

Newt’s handwriting is very sloppy, unorganized, and angular. This type of writing indicates argumentativeness and aggressiveness. Overall, this chicken-scratch writing is not a style that impresses me very much as a handwriting expert looking for emotional clues of emotional stability, ethics, and or level – headed thinking.

The tilt of the baseline upwards indicates overall optimism. I just see someone who wants to get on with it, push people out of the way and argue his opinion.

Rick Santorum — Rick Santorum’s signature is actually quite aesthetically pleasing. It has a steady rhythm which implies maturity. It has a fluid motion in the R and the S, which implies the ability to go from one topic to the next. He does have determination. He is intelligent. Not quite as intelligent as Mitt Romney, but this is one of the more balanced candidates and he has reasonable, practical goals. I think this is one of the most grounded of the candidates whom we’re looking at today.

Rick Perry — Ricky Perry decided not to sign the baseball at all. Rick Perry decided to print his name. Maybe he doesn’t sign his name in cursive? or maybe he just doesn’t want to participate in the assignment at hand. So, his printing would imply that he is going to write print? his name on the ball and, bend the rules. Printing, as usual, says “I’m not going to reveal anything deep and personal about my life.”  Most of these candidates have no idea that their signatures reveal something scientific, but most of them have an idea that people will save this and cherish it. Rick just didn’t seem to care whether or not people had his signature.

Ron Paul — Ron Paul’s handwriting shows a shaky and slow penmanship. Now, this could be related to declining health, and is often seen as a natural by-product of old age. Shakiness or tremor in handwriting normally is a pre-cursor to serious health issues or sluggish thinking in old age.

The traits that reveal themselves in the signature are bluntness and bold talkativeness, honesty, straightforwardness with his opinions, and an authentic personality—what you see is what you do get. This is most refreshing from a political candidate. It is also a trait that usually doesn’t win election, as brutal honesty eventually alienates some portion of the voting public.

This type of personal transparency is the dead opposite of Newt Gingrich. Newt Gingrich’s signature is illegible, fast, impatient, and rapid. Ron Paul’s is methodical, clear headed, intentional.

So, despite his age and any risk that is associated with old age in a candidate, Ron Paul does seem to be the most transparent and ethical of all of the candidates.

One should note that any discussion of politics and ethics is filled with land-mines because of the varying definitions of “ethics.” It is a very difficult discussion that few can win unless someone is caught in a bald- faced lie, scandal, or is revealed to be a cheating spouse. But personality – wise, it is my belief that transparency, talkativeness, candidness, bluntness, and lack of secretiveness are traits that- push an individual toward authenticity. Having a strong ethical foundation is a good starting point for all of the challenges, secrecy, strategies, and ethical quandaries that one must be handle in the Oval Office. Handwriting analysis is not a perfect predictor of someone’s core values, nor can it perfectly predict how someone will react when faced with a moral quandary; it can only point at a likely outcome, depending on how damaged, reactive, or ego-maniacal the personality really is.

As stated in a previous conversation with the writer, a more accurate and comprehensive personally profile of all of these candidates could be ascertained with a broader handwriting sample that – includes all 26 letters of alphabet and writing done at different times. As a professional psychological profiler through handwriting, I have over 140 traits to choose from; the baseball signature often shows me two to – five reliable strokes. I believe those two to five personality traits to be accurate, but by no means comprehensive.

In a recent survey to our 30,000 readers, like you, it was apparent that you want more analysis or REAL PEOPLE with step-by-step explanations of how I analyze handwriting of everyday people.

(Sure celebrities and politicians are interesting… but you are in the real world analyzing real people everyday, right?)

This is the writing of a great tanning salon receptionist (true story).

One would think that the person who wrote this sample is a youthful teenager or in their early 20s, but that is not always accurate.  We often see bubbly, large, middle-zone handwriting in females in the ages teen to 20s but you’ll also find this up through age 50.  What is accurate about that inaccurate observation is that the person is playful, immature, lives in the moment and is probably a lot fun to be around.

The most obvious trait in this young lady’s handwriting is the large middle zone.  This area in graphology is often called the M. Z. (middle zone).  Any time you have a large middle zone you have an exceptional and exaggerated need and ability for social aptitude and this is usually at the expense of both philosophy and/or physical nature.  In this case her lower loops Ys are not particularly long or strong and the upper zones are not nonexistent but not predominant so you find this person predominately lives in the moment which of course is the definition of fun.  What is fun?  It’s someone who can be completely in the moment.  However I wouldn’t call that a Zen, spiritually evolved person such as be in the moment, appreciate what happens, etc.  Now I talked mostly about the middle zone because this is the primary trait and when you look at handwriting you definitely look at what’s the most primary and outrageous trait first because that will dominate the overall personality.

If you look at the individual strokes you’ll find some other interesting things which would fill in the gaps to make this person unique from let’s say 20 of her 21-year-old friends that also work at a tanning salon.

The backwards T bar which is pointed is often considered self-castigation or self-punishment.  You might find self-deprecation as a sense of humor.  You find the T bar is in the middle zone which is an average to a low self-esteem.

You find the O’s are open at top which makes her talkative.  This is not surprising at all considering how big the middle zone is.  You see someone who is both friendly and talkative and socially gregarious.

Now if you look at the slant and you’re a beginner in handwriting analysis you might make the mistake of assuming because the slant is an AB writer the person’s introverted.  This is not true.  Because the slant is AB in certain portions it means the person has a tendency to make logical, self-centered decisions.  That has nothing to do with being introverted and although the basic books imply that AB writers are sometimes more emotionally withdrawn it is really based on a average-sized middle zone.  A middle zone can completely change the definition of introvert or extravert depending on the slant and the combination thereof.

The word takes has a large K so you see a little bit of defiance.  The Y in you has a little bit of aggressiveness backwards to the pass so you may find some annoyance or irritation and the I dots tend to be close to the stems so you do see some good eye for detail.

The two traits that I think are really useful is in the bottom line you see the word meeting, you see the word see and you see the word soon.  All of these contain a excessive Figure 8 which is a sign of intelligence and a sign of fluid thinking so you see this individual is very social, very friendly and very smooth at talking so I hope this person’s at the front desk selling tanning memberships which is where this is from because she would be great talker.  Talkative people aren’t always good talkers.  Sometimes they just move their mouth.  People with connected letters such as the S and the P and the E and the Figure 8 they’re always loquacious and that is a great word for you to look up and add to your dictionary of wonderful vocabulary words to explain to somebody in handwriting analysis.

What kind of job would this person have?  Easy.  Put this person in front of people; retail, sales, face to face or telephone people.  Make sure that they are interacting with people because they have a strong need for social connection and a strong need for connecting with other people and they’re very good at it.  They are naturally empathetic and they really, really do need people like a flower needs water.

Enjoy reading this article about the Director of the Office of Management and Budget Jack Lew’s ridiculous handwritten signature.

Office of Management and Budget Director Jack Lew has signed an otherwise dry memo with his rather unusual, slightly childish signature.

The Wall Street Journal‘s David Wessel tweeted, “Is this really what Jack Lew’s signature looks like?”

The John Hancock was on a memo detailing ways in which the federal government has and should continue to cut costs by running more efficiently. Its series of loops looks like a youngster’s first attempt at writing cursive.

The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza tweeted that he had confirmed the signature did in fact belong to Lew.

Jacob (more commonly known as “Jack”) Lew became the Director of the Office of Management and Budget in November 2010, taking back the position that he had previously held from 1998 to 2001. During his time out of office, Lew served as COO of Citi Global Wealth Management and then Citi Alternative Investments, according to his official White House Profile.

He’s also previously aided a number of extremely important organizations, including a stint on the National Security Council and involvement with non-profits such as the the Kaiser Family Foundation. As an aide to President Clinton from 1993 to 1994 he helped to develop Americorps, the national service program.

When he adopted this wacky signature is unknown.

Lew has played a crucial role in the budget debates, most recently in regards to the President’s $467-billion jobs bill. The memo signed here was not exactly as controversial as the crucial arguments over the national debt.

Writing something down by hand lights up larger areas of the brain than typing or speaking it. what can you say about it? all I can say is “Handwriting still matters”.
Over the holidays, I got to see my now almost grown niece and nephews wield their touch screens and Twitter accounts in ways far beyond my middle aged comprehension, to the point where I asked: do these kids even need to know how to use pen and paper any more?

Turns out the answer is a surprising “Yes, yes they do.”

The personal intimacy of the handwritten note is what we love, but the Wall Street Journal reports it’s way beyond that. You see, writing something down by hand lights up larger areas of the brain than typing or speaking it. Something to do with having to remember and write individual pen strokes, which activates thinking and language centers.

In other words, if you write it down you’re more likely to remember it. Studies show it seems to help kids learn faster. And what’s more, good penmanship still matters. One study showed good looking, easy to-read handwriting can mean a better grades for a medicore exam while illegible writing well.

Now let’s be real, back at Keene Elmentary they would tell you little Derek McGinty’s handwriting was simply terrible and I can tell you it’s no better with age. But now, I think I oughta thank my third grade teacher Mrs. Wilburn for doing the best she could.

We’ve heard jokes about J. Edgar Hoover for the past 40 years… now there is a feature film starring Leonardo DiCaprio in your local theater.

Was his brutal, iron-fisted reign of power and secrecy just a Hollywood writer’s evil twist?  Or did he really deserve the criticism and rumors which has followed him for the past 40 years?

With the new movie coming out called Hoover starring Leonardo DiCaprio it came to my attention that my readers would love for me to analyze J. Edgar Hoover handwriting and see if his handwriting builds up to the interesting and dark character that’s portrayed in the movie or he lives up to the vicious rumors about his sexuality that has been floating around for over 40 years.

Now we’ll start with Sample No. 1 and we’ll get into a couple of things as illustrated in the diagram.

First of all his T bars indicate he is definitely dominant, pushy, and gets his way.  The M’s and N’s are all pointed, that indicates super analytical humps and I would even say hypercritical minded.

His D’s don’t have a loop in them which doesn’t mean he’s not sensitive, it means that he handles criticism with a lot of pride and dignity.

The long T bars in enthusiasm, the T bars that look like a bow-tie actually have a couple of traits.  The bow-tie means persistence, the brace that looks like an Indian teepee, that’s called stubbornness.

Finally, on this page we see a very big Y loops that are extremely large and awkwardly shaped.  I call them odd shaped Y’s and G’s.  That would be an excessive amount of imagination, exaggerates little details, and obviously would indicate some unusual or creative sexual leanings.  Now I’m not saying that he really was homosexual as the rumors throughout the ages have insinuated he had a relationship with one of his assistants but the handwriting definitely makes for a possibility that I would believe based on his open mindedness and his creativity.

Let’s move on to Sample No. 2.  This one of course has the slant as the most predominant character.  I’ve actually measured some slants there for you to look at.  But it looks like he is an AB slant on the words “I would do” and then “it” and the word “two disk recovered” he’s a DE or E plus slant.  This variation in slant indicates multiple personalities, unpredictable mood swings, and of course difficult to be around.

The personal printed I is missing the first loop as it’s missing the bottom left loop.  In most books that would indicate daddy issues but if you’ve read my courses and in detail sometimes those loops are reversed so I’m looking forward to seeing the movie to see if there was a daddy issue or a mother issue that’s unresolved because it looks like one of the parents were not around.

As I look through the handwriting it is definitely has lots of stubborn, lots of vanity, lots of persistence, and too many irons in the fire.  If you look at the bottom right hand corner you see these G’s dangling into the writing below, that is called entangled writing and that means the person has too many irons in the fire, gets confused, gets overwhelmed, and of course sometimes lose track of things because he gets his finger in too many pies so to speak.  If you look at the arrow on the word ‘the’ you’ll see that a lot of the strokes go back into the past including those two bars.  That indicates some guilt and some repression, maybe some guilt over past mistakes or past actions. He does have a high T bar. If you read some of the books you’ll think a high T bar is always good but a high T bar in this case would just accentuate his belief that he’s right and his confidence that he can get what he wants.  There is no arguing this was a powerful man.  Finally, he’s got closed E loops and closed E loops are by definition means he does not listen to other people’s ideas.  So he’s close minded, he knows it all, he’s arrogant, and he’s pushy.
